Welcome to the Showgrounds Community Men's Shed

Click to View our Shed FlyerThe Showgrounds Community Men's Shed provides opportunities for members to work on their own projects, join a team working on Shed activities and tasks, or just share time, recreation and fellowship with other members.  Many of our activities include partners and family, so we celebrate the broader world of men as well as the uniqueness of men together.

New members and anyone interested in who we are and what we do, are very welcome any time we’re open, so feel free to call by the Shed at the Claremont Showgrounds (enter through Gate 8 off Ashton Avenue), and have a chat to us to see how we go about men’s interests and wellbeing.

Our Shed is part of the nation-wide network of Men’s Sheds in Australia and is supported locally by the Men’s Shed of WA (MSWA).  Drop into any Shed and have a look at what we do.

The Shed welcomes requests from the Public to undertake jobs from small repairs to larger woodworking projects for reasonable fees, so bring us your ideas or items that need fixing and see what we can offer.

We hope you find useful information on this website that shows how we support community members in both purpose as men together as well as having fun and recreation to enjoy life to the full.  Please get in touch if you feel we can be part of your lifestyle or undertake tasks that help you in your day to day life.

Prof Stephen Martin - UK Bee Researcher visit
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
01:00 PM – 04:00 PM
We have agreed to host a talk at the Showgrounds Mens Shed by Prof Stephen Martin on the Varroa Mite and its impact on Bee management.  This is a flying visit to Perth and he is only available on the afternoon of May 30th.  The timing of the talk is still uncertain but we expect it will be for about 2 hours early afternoon. The talk will be open to the wider bee community in Perth so places will be limited. Stephen has studied social insects (bees, wasps, termites and ants) for most of his career. His areas of specialisation are the ‘hornet ecology’, ‘pest and diseases of honeybees’ and ‘chemical ecology of ants’. He holds a Chair in Social Entomology in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences at Salford University, Manchester. Prior to that he spent 12 years working at Sheffield University, 7 years with the National Bee Unit and 7 years in Japan conducting research into hornets. Stephen is best known for his work on the Varroa mite a global parasite of honeybees and its association with viruses, especially the Deformed Wing Virus, but more recently his expertise in hornet biology is in demand, both nationally and internationally. His research funded in part by beekeepers aims to understand why some honey bee colonies have become naturally tolerant to Varroa and see if this information can provide beekeepers with a long-term solution to their mite-problem. The following link below provides one of his talks.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa56mUJSApQ

We still have space for 3 more people next week.  So move quickly if you have forgotten to enrol.  Anyone who would like to brings a guest can do so. Stephen   Our next meeting is being hosted by Nick Katin.  Nick has just returned from South Africa so there is no surprise as to the theme of our next meeting.  Our ever reliable expert advisor (AI) says the following "South African wine areas are celebrated globally for their dramatic landscapes, historic estates, and innovative winemaking. Experts and visitors praise the region for producing world-class Chenin Blanc, Bordeaux blends, and its signature Pinotage, offering a premium "old-world" quality through a modern, "new-world" lens."  The picture above delivers on the landscape promise and I am sure Nick as some great wines in store for us. As usual there are 20 places at $25/head so reserve you spot quickly to avoid disappointment.  If you miss out please tell me as we often have one or two last minute cancellations.
