Wood Turning

Our Shed is equipped with a number of new wood lathes and an extensive range of quality tools and accessories, all of which is freely available to members to use.

We currently conducted classes run by an experienced turner, for our new turners. The classes are over three hours every Friday morning over an 8 week period. There is a $150 charge for each course attendee, which is excellent value, in that members receive a Sundstrom half face dust mask and all timber required for the course.

At the completion of the course, members should be reasonably accomplished in the use of most woodturning chisels and sharpening techniques and have a strong understanding of finishing items, particularly with lacquer. In addition, with a little extra work after each lesson, the attendees will have completed four delightful wood turned items, as a successful start to this very interesting wood craft.

A Wood Turning Group has been formally created with its own Team Leader. As with other Groups within the Shed, there are regular meetings of the Group, which are a combination of demonstrations and “hands-on” sessions, to further develop members’ skills.

The number of lathes and related equipment located in our Shed has recently been expanded, due to increasing demand and popularity of the craft, by Group members.

Our Shed has recognized there is a lack of a comprehensive Wood Turning facility in the Perth western suburbs, so our goal is to help remedy this situation, and become a major focal point in this area.
