Wood Turning
The Woodturning Group is made up of shed members who share a passion for the art. Whether you’re an experienced turner who wants to share and learn new ideas, or a complete novice looking to start out, you are welcome in the Woodturning Group.
Our Shed is equipped with five wood lathes and an extensive range of quality tools and accessories, all of which is freely available to members to use, once they have completed the Introductory Course.
This Introductory Course includes :
- Safe turning practices and equipment use
- Proper chisel use and sharpening.
- Wood selection and turning techniques.
- Finishing and lacquering of projects.
- A respirator face mask, which is included in the price.
The classes are over three hours every Friday morning over an 8 week period. There is a $200 charge for each course attendee, which is excellent value, in that members receive a Sundstrom half face dust mask and all the timber required for the course.
At the completion of the course, members should be reasonably accomplished in the use of most woodturning chisels and sharpening techniques and have a strong understanding of finishing items, particularly with lacquer. In addition, with a little extra work after each lesson, the attendees will have completed four delightful wood turned items, as a successful start to this very interesting wood craft.
Our Shed has recognized there is a lack of a comprehensive Wood Turning facility in the Perth western suburbs, so our goal is to help remedy this situation, and become a major focal point in this area. Our experienced members are happy to help new members who are just starting out, or to assist them with more challenging projects.
