A life in Marine Science, Glen Whisson

In this fascinating talk about his work in the world of aquatic science, Dr Whisson will discuss his previous involvement in the aquaculture industry, the extraordinary marine biodiversity prevailing in Western Australia, and the three marine science books he has co-authored with Alexandra Hoschke: The Rottnest Island Fish Book (2017), The Perth Coast Fish Book (2021), and The Ningaloo Marine Life Identification Guide (2024). You will also hear about the role of Citizen Science in understanding biodiversity, and get an insight into Dr Whisson's future publication and research plans.

About Glen Whisson:

Glen spent 20 years as a university academic at the University of Western Australia researching and lecturing in the aquatic sciences. He was the Founding President of the Silver Perch Association of WA and served on the executive of the WA Marron Growers Association for 10 years. Glen is a Past President of the International Association of Astacology and was awarded Honorary Life Membership in 2004 for contributions to crayfish science. He now follows his passion for marine science as a partner in Aqua Research & Monitoring Services, developing non-invasive approaches to fish biodiversity monitoring and publishing fish identification resources both online and in print. A long-time resident of the Perth Hills, Glen lives with his wife Tania in Darlington, where they raised their two daughters.
