August Book Club discussion
04:00 PM – 06:00 PM
Hello again Book club colleagues.  This is your event invitation to our discussion of ‘The Island of Sea Women’ commencing at 4 p.m. next Tuesday afternoon, August 26th. Some of you may have noticed that Jeju island has been in the news recently because of a problematic behaviour by tourists - (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c939j4n2274o) At present we have not decided on a book of the month for November. If anyone has a good recommendation that they are familiar with, and is accessible to our members, please make a nomination at our meeting next Tuesday. I sometimes want to access a book that is not available at my library and look for it on the Internet Archive at https://archive.org . You may be interested to know that in 2020 four of the world’s largest publishers (Hachette, HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, and Wiley) sued the archive for lending books via 'controlled digital lending'. That lawsuit, Hachette v. Internet Archive, is currently on appeal so thousands of the texts once freely available on line are presently quarantined, pending the outcome of the appeal. Nevertheles, a lot of historical material is still available. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about The Island of Sea Women next Tuesday. Best, Ross

Special 19th August 2025 Wine Group meeting - Faber Wines Tasting
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
04:30 PM – 06:30 PM
The Shed Wine Appreciation Group invites you to attend this special Wine Tasting event from Faber Wines in the Swan Valley. At this Event, John Griffiths, Faber Winery Owner and Chief Winemaker will be presenting a range of Wines of both older Vintages and more recent Vintages. John has earned a reputation for creating rich, ripe wines with strong varietal flavours. John believes wine should be inspired, carefully crafted, distinctive and characterful. Indeed John is a lot like his wines – robust and up front, with an air of mischief. To accompany the Wines, we will also be serving some tasty fingerfoods for you. The Event is now open to Members of the Wine Appreciation Group and either their Partner or a friend. Limit of 1 partner or friend please. As always this Event will be held in the Shed Conference Room. The Event will be open to all Shed Members on the 15th August, if we cannot fill the Event fom the Wine Appreciation Group by this date, so I would urge you to get in fast if you would like to attend.   More about the Winemaker Faber Vineyard was established in 1997 by John Griffiths and Jane Micallef. Faber is the Latin word for craft.  John Griffiths spent 10 years learning the skills of making highly drinkable wines in warm climates before arriving in the Swan Valley. He recognized that the Swan Valley was unique in its ability to produce delicate, refined white wines, smooth generously flavoured and long-lived red wines, and extremely rich luscious liqueur styles. As he refined his winemaking skills he learnt about the proven grape varieties and wine styles that had over one hundred years of development and success in the Swan Valley. John has chosen to embrace what are traditional varieties for the Swan Valley – Verdelho, Shiraz and Brown Muscat – as the “backbone” of Faber Vineyard. He has delivered his own interpretation of these varieties, all be it built on tradition, and set new standards of excellence. He has also innovated with new varieties, introducing Petit Verdot to the Swan, and new styles including his Chardonnay Blanc de Blanc. He has sourced outstanding fruit from outside the Swan Valley that complements the Swan’s strengths. Superb Cabernet Sauvignon from Frankland River and unique Durif from Donnybrook stand out.
