Woodworking Verification of Competency (VOC) Assessments (week commencing 30th October)
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
31-10-2023 01:00 PM – 03-11-2023 04:00 PM
To maintain your Blue Dot Woodworking Accreditation you will need to, you will need to undertake a Verification of Competency (VOC) Assessment as follows.
Woodworking members aged under 75 years will be assessed every 24 months
Woodworking members aged 75 to 84 years will be assessed every 18 months
Woodworking members older than 85 years will be assessed every 12 months
You will be assigned a simple task which shouldn’t take more than about 30 minutes. This is not a test of your craftsmanship; it is simply a demonstration that you can competently use the machinery unsupervised without endangering yourself or others.
You can book your VOC Assessment by clicking on your preferred VOC Assessment date below. The Rostered Supervisor for the day will oversee your assessment and he will either deem you "competent" or refer you to a Trainer for further assessment or training.
If you choose not to do the VOC Assessment, you will no longer be able to use the Machine Room equipment unsupervised.

Honey extraction
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
01:00 PM – 04:00 PM
Fellow Beekeepers,,
You will be pleased to know that we have a lot of full frames of honey. As a consequence we need to extract our honey and get ready for the spring flow.
We are hoping that we can get enough starters to do the extraction next Friday 27th commencing at 1pm. There are about 40+ frames to be tackled. We are thinking we will do what we can and stop about 4pm to clean up and possibly enjoy a cold beer.
Could you please indicate if you can join us by "getting a ticket". Of course this is a free event.
We look froward to seeing you

Beer & Bullshit Sundowner - The Geologic Facts about Climate Change
04:00 PM – 06:00 PM
Due to the Perth Royal Show delaying normal proceedings our very next Beer and Bullshit event on Wednesday 11th October.
The presenter for this meeting is our very own member, Dr Jaap Poll, who will be providing a very interesting presentation on Climate Change.
Jaap has provided the following outline of his presentaion:
Title: The Geologic Facts about Climate Change - (climate change is real – with or without people)
One of the original founders and current member of our Showgrounds Mens Shed, Dr Jaap Poll is a Geoscientist and worked in the oil industry on all continents before settling in Australia in 1969, first with Shell followed by Woodside in the 70’s. Jaap has lived in Perth since 1980 with a short 2 year break in PNG as CEO of OilSearch.
Jaap has been active in the climate change debate over the past two decades. Climate has been changing ever since earth started to develop an atmosphere a few billion years ago - you would have thought that all educated people know this - including climate scientists. The geologic record shows that earth has been warmer and ice free for most of its time with much higher CO2 levels than today, even during its colder periods. The record also shows that CO2 is not the temperature driver. With changing temperatures CO2 slowly follows, not the other way around.
…. and yet the world is obsessed with zero carbon at horrendous cost to mankind
As per usual, folowing the talk, there will be loads of time for questions, fellowship and the opportunity to socialise with your fellow Sheddies.
So come along, be educated, inquisitive, engaged and be social by enjoying the company of your fellow Sheddies at this Sundowner.
Best regards
Peter Panek
President

Free Skin Checks - (for the first 20 responders)
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
10-10-2023 09:00 AM – 26-10-2023 05:00 PM
Now that the Perth Royal Show is over it is time to attend to other important matters.
With increasing intensity of the sun and UV light at this time of year it is appropriate to think of taking care of our skin. If you haven't had a skin check this year I would encourage you to do so.
Our Health and Wellness Co-ordinator Michael Hart, has arranged for up to 20 Members to have skin checks performed by a "skin doctor". It will take about 10 minutes and will be done in the Shed Photography Room. This is being funded by a grant from Men'S Shed Australia.
You can book here. There are only 20 spots, so First in Best (un)dressed!!
Michael will contact each person who has booked and arrange a date and time that suits.
