Our first Kitchen Team lunch of 2025 will take us to the ever popular Vietnamese Restaurant "Huong Viet Noodle House" in Claremont, on the side of the Claremont Quarter shopping centre. Their menu consists of a variety of Asian dishes but we will concentrate on their traditional Vietnamese food. Michael and I will be ordering a range of entrees and main courses that we will share, and it will include the famous "Bánh Xèo" or "Yellow Pancake" which you can see in the picture above! As usual, we will bring our own drinks. Please book a free ticket to help us gauge numbers for this event. For those who need transport, we will leave from the Men's Shed around 11:45am to drive to the restaurant. Please let us know if you want to catch a ride from the Shed. Our Winter Sundowners are back! In preparation for the cooler weather, we are moving the sundowners following the monthly Wellbeing Group talks to inside the Men's Shed. Depending on interest, this might be in the meeting room or the woodworking hall. In addition to a fully stocked bar, we will offer a selection of warm and cold entrees that members and guests will be able to enjoy for a small fee of $10 per person. If you only want to stay for a quick drink & a chat with friends after the health talk, there will be some chips and nuts available free of charge. To help the Kitchen Team with the food preparations, we need pre-payment with your registration.   Should you not be able to attend, you can get a credit towards a future event if you cancel at least 24 hours before the event. Join us to hear from world-renowned hypertension specialist, Professor Markus Schlaich, to learn more about research into detecting, managing and controlling blood pressure. Professor Schlaich leads a team of dedicated researchers who run numerous clinical trials and research studies every year to optimise treatments and improve health outcomes. Prof Schlaich is a Nephrologist and Hypertension specialist with a strong background in clinical research. His main scientific interests focus is on pathophysiologic aspects of hypertension. He has authored more than 350 articles and book chapters in peer reviewed journals, and he has received several research prizes and awards, such as WA Scientist of the year award in 2024. He currently serves as President of Hypertension Australia, Co-Lead of the National Hypertension Taskforce, Treasurer and Director of the South Pacific, World Hypertension League, Hypertension Consultant at Royal Perth Hospital and Dobney Chair in Clinical Research at the Dobney Hypertension Centre, University of Western Australia, Medical School, Royal Perth Hospital Unit. We are scheduled to prepare another Homeless meal in cooperation with Matilda Bay Rotary Club. Now that we have entered the cooler period, we will be cooking a more hearty meal comprising of a nice Meat Stew or a Shepherds Pie, depending on the type of produce that will be dropped off by MBRC. Hello Cooking Class Sheddies I hope you will join me for the next cooking class on Tuesday 27 May at 9am. We will eat what we cook and lunch will be at about 12.30pm. This month we will make the classic Singaporean noodle stir fry char kway teow. As usual, we will have 2 electric woks on the bench, so everyone will be able to have a go. I cooked the dish for the monthly lunch in April and it was well received. Here is your opportunity to master the dish. This will be followed by a blueberry crostata (blueberries and almonds baked in a sweet shortcrust pastry).  A fixed cost of $20 per person will apply to each class to cover ingredients. To maintain your Blue Dot Woodworking Accreditation you will need to, you will need to undertake a Verification of Competency (VOC) Assessment as follows. Woodworking members aged under 75 years will be assessed every 24 months Woodworking members aged 75 to 84 years will be assessed every 18 months Woodworking members older than 85 years  will be assessed every 12 months You will be assigned a simple task which shouldn’t take more than about 30 minutes. This is not a test of your craftsmanship; it is simply a demonstration that you can competently use the machinery unsupervised without endangering yourself or others.  You can book your VOC Assessment by clicking on your preferred VOC Assessment date below. The Rostered Supervisor for the day will oversee your assessment and he will either deem you "competent" or refer you to a Trainer for further assessment or training. If you choose not to do the VOC Assessment,  you will no longer be able to use the Machine Room equipment unsupervised.

Woodworking Machinery Induction (Blue Dot) – Phases 1 & 2 All Members who wish to use the woodworking machinery in the Machine Room will need to complete Phase 1 & Phase 2 of the Woodworking Machinery Induction Training. Please Note that Members must have completed the Red Dot course before enrolling in this Blue Dot course? This Course will be conducted in two Phases over two consecutive weeks (9am - 12pm) so you must be able to commit to both sessions before purchasing a ticket. Each Phase will be approximately a three hour duration. There will be a maximum of 3 persons for each Session. The Cost of this course (for both Phases) is $20.  If after booking, for some reason you cannot attend the training, please advise Michael Cahill on 0459062090 as soon as possible, so we can arrange another session for you.  If you cancel or are a “no show” on the day you will lose your $20 fee so please, only book if you can commit to the two consecutive weeks. Payments can be made online by secure credit card.  Once you have completed both phases of the Woodworking Machinery Induction your Membership Badge will be updated to replace the Red Dot with a Blue Dot.  This will reflect that you have completed all the necessary Woodworking Training and are ready to undertake any Woodworking projects in the Shed.
