Taking Better photos with your Smartphone Workshop   While everyone loves the look of a photo from a “real” camera, the best camera is usually the one you have with you.  Smartphone cameras have gotten more phenomenal in the past few years, with companies beefing up photo resolution, adding more lenses, improved settings and integrating options to share photos with family and friends.   Les Gunn will lead this workshop identifying tips and tricks for taking better photos with your smartphone.    Please book the relevant tickets ASAP to assist with planning and catering.   I hope to see you there.   Mike Somerville-Brown

Our first two Sundowners have proved to be very popular but Sundowner No 3 was down on numbers.  These Sundowners provide a great opportunityfor our Shed members to come together and socialise and get to know there fellow Sheddies better which is a big part of being part of the Mens Shed movement As per usual, minor nibbles will be available, but don't expect too much as I am not part of the Kitchen group. Drinks will be priced at a subsidised price of $4 for any beer or glass of wine which you can choose from our stock on hand. Payment is made at the end of the night, so just keep your own tab and settle up before you go. Also any assistance to clean up will be greatly appreciated. The session will be divided into two parts, as follows; Part 1: 2.00 - 3.30pm Workshop at Mens Shed: Review of results from the previous two workshops: the application of shutter speed techniques and the field trip to the Turquoise Coast, WA. It is suggested that interested participants provide up to 8 photos for review. The purpose is for participants to comment on learnings and the results of their images. Images should be provided to me prior to the Workshop on a USB thumb drive. Part 2: 3.30 - 6.00pm Field Trip to Fremantle: We will travel to selected sites around Fremantle and focus on photographing urban street art in and around Fremantle. Details for the trip will be provided on the day. The session will commence in South Fremantle and conclude in the centre of the city in time for a meal and discussion. Transport will be by private cars which can be shared. Please indicate if you can provide a lift to others who may not have access to a car by selecting the Transport "ticket". This month we are bringing back our Asian Chef Keng Wong who will lead the Kitchen team in the preparation of a traditional Indonesian "Nasi Goreng" - Fried rice with chicken.  Our 'Tiger' Wok burner will again be in action under the roof outside of the Conference room where you can watch Chef Keng weave his magic.  To finish your meal, we will offer some "Bubur Kajang Hijau" - a classic sweet mung bean porridge with sago pearls! Cost for food will be $15 with beer and wine at standard prices.  As usual, we require pre-payment with your registration.  You will be able to get a credit towards a future event if you cancel at least 1 day before this luncheon. No-shows on the day will forfeit their ticket fee. The Kangaroo Paw Masterclass will feature a demonstration by Sylvia Thom of how to separate Kangaroo Paw plants to make more, viable plants.  Sylvia Has worked as a volunteer at Friends of King's Park for many years and after demonstrating the technique, will supervise the native plant sub-group of the garden team as they put the technique into effect. The Masterclass will replace the Garden Group monthly meeting and participation in the Masterclass is free for all those who have already indicated that they would be attending the monthly meeting.  There will be a $5 charge payable on the day for all other attendees to cover the costs of materials.

Shutter Priority Practical Workshop - Peter Buck “ Shutter speed, along with aperture and ISO, is one of the key components of the exposure triangle. In other words, it is integral to the final quality and message of an image." Peter Buck will take us through a range of practical exercises around the Shed and Showgrounds controlling shutter speed, for a variety of situations. He will illustrate how it can enhance the impact of movement and be a significant influencer of mood in the final image.  We will have the opportunity to review our photos at the end of the workshop. The next wine appreciation night is scheduled for September 7th.  We have Mike Hart doing white then Malcolm Tew, Neil McKinnon and Steve Gerreyn each bringing red.  At this meeting, Leigh Gerryn will be joining us to share with us some of his passion and experience about wine (and perhaps ensure Steve doesn’t tell any porkys about his red).  It promises to be an interesting night. During the month some members have aired some thoughts about the format of the night and Graeme and I will be seeking feedback on whether things can be changed or improved.  Presentations have generally been well received but some think they can be a little too long (and erode valuation drinking time and discussion).  Others have suggested a change in approach whereby an individual volunteers to run the entire evening and bring wines to illustrate a theme they are keen to share with us.  In this vein we could set up a schedule months in advance so that there is plenty of time to ponder the theme and obtain the necessary wines. Of course nothing should be “fixed in stone” and a combinations of formats may be the best way to accommodate everyone’s preferences.
