Blue Dot Verification of Competency (VOC) Assessments (week commencing 5 February '24)

To maintain your Blue Dot Woodworking Accreditation you will need to, you will need to undertake a Verification of Competency (VOC) Assessment as follows. Woodworking members aged under 75 years will be assessed every 24 months Woodworking members aged 75 to 84 years will be assessed every 18 months Woodworking members older than 85 years  will be assessed every 12 months You will be assigned a simple task which shouldn’t take more than about 30 minutes. This is not a test of your craftsmanship; it is simply a demonstration that you can competently use the machinery unsupervised without endangering yourself or others.  You can book your VOC Assessment by clicking on your preferred VOC Assessment date below. The Rostered Supervisor for the day will oversee your assessment and he will either deem you "competent" or refer you to a Trainer for further assessment or training. If you choose not to do the VOC Assessment,  you will no longer be able to use the Machine Room equipment unsupervised.

Introduction to CNC Routing

Want to learn how to design cnc projects and cut them on the cnc router? John Hassell will be running a two part introductory course for those interested in CNC routing. This course will give you some insight into the potential of cnc routing in woodworking projects. The course will be run over two consecutive Friday morning sessions staring at 9:00 am in the Shed Meeting Room. The first Friday session on February 2nd  will be an introduction to VCarve Pro, the CAD software used to design cnc projects. The second Friday session on February 9th will be practical session on the cnc  router. In the first session we will work through a simple name plate design in VCarve Pro step by step, and in the second session we will look at how to set up and machine a project on the cnc machine. To participate in this course you will need:- 1. Reasonable computer literacy. 2. A Windows laptop computer and mouse. Sorry, VCarve Pro will not run on an Apple computer. 3. A functioning copy of VCarve Pro Trial Edition installed on your laptop. This can be downloaded from https://www.vectric.com/free-trial The course is free, but you will need to take a ticket as we limit numbers to the first 10 persons. See you there. Photography Group - February Workshop

The Photography Leadership Team is holding its first workshop in February to discuss the diverse range of photography activities that are proposed during 2024. 2024 PHOTOGRAPHY PROGRAM OVERVIEW We have an extensive program for 2024 which includes workshops, field trips and projects to cater for still and video photography. Highlights include: A monthly project- the objective of our projects is not a competition, but rather to challenge members to take interesting and creative photos. Each month a workshop led by experienced photographers to help improve our knowledge of photography followed by a field trip as an opportunity to practice these skills. An overnight field trip in October to the Albany Region ( final dates subject to transport & accommodation arrangements) to photograph local flora & fauna, rugged landscapes and of course visit some of the local “watering holes”. Special Interest Streams include Drone Photography, Video Photography, How to edit your photos in Lightroom and/or Photoshop; Scanning, etc. If you are interested in joining our Group please email me at sbmike9@gmail.com for further details. Frank is a Gastroenterologist who has recently retired after 40 years in practice. He qualified in Medicine at University College Dublin in 1979 and completed his training in gastroenterology in 1990. He has worked at Sir Charles Gairdiner Hospital and Hollywood Hospital since then. He has been involved in the training advanced trainees during this time. He has a particular interest in screening the colon for cancer and could be called a Master Colonoscopist! I am sure that he will give an excellent talk laced with some Irish Humour !!

Bicycles, bicycles, bicycles

All members are welcome to join our new team leaders, Bruno and Richard, every Tuesday and Wednesday morning for the bicycle group's regular bicycle repair events.  No experience is necessary but a good sense of humour is encouraged to fully appreciate the friendly banter and fellowship during these events.  No tickets are required, just come along.

Woodworking Machinery Induction (Blue Dot) – Tuesdays 30th Jan and 6th Feb '24

Woodworking Machinery Induction (Blue Dot) – Phases 1 & 2 All Members who wish to use the woodworking machinery in the Machine Room will need to complete Phase 1 & Phase 2 of the Woodworking Machinery Induction Training. Please Note that Members must have completed the Red Dot course before enrolling in this Blue Dot course? This Course will be conducted in two Phases over two consecutive weeks (9am - 12pm) so you must be able to commit to both sessions before purchasing a ticket. Each Phase will be approximately a three hour duration. There will be a maximum of 3 persons for each Session. The Cost of this course (for both Phases) is $20.  If after booking, for some reason you cannot attend the training, please advise Michael Cahill on 0459062090 as soon as possible, so we can arrange another session for you.  If you cancel or are a “no show” on the day you will lose your $20 fee so please, only book if you can commit to the two consecutive weeks. Payments can be made online by secure credit card.  Once you have completed both phases of the Woodworking Machinery Induction your Membership Badge will be updated to replace the Red Dot with a Blue Dot.  This will reflect that you have completed all the necessary Woodworking Training and are ready to undertake any Woodworking projects in the Shed.

SCMS January Sundowner with Pizzas and Desserts in the Garden

The Wine and Kitchen groups are combining to host a sundowner with pizzas and desserts under the new lights in our Shed garden area. The Wine group will be providing a selection of fine wines to match the delightful pizzas from our "Pizza-King" Simon Benwell and his crew, and we will finish the meal with a nice dessert. As usual, partners and spouses are very welcome to come along and enjoy the evening at the Shed! Cost for food will be $18 with beer and wine at standard prices.   To help us gauge demand, we require pre-payment with your registration.  You will be able to get a credit towards a future event if you cancel at least 24 hours before the event, Should you need to cancel, please send an email to wernerribul@mac.com. No-shows on the day will forfeit their ticket fee. If you previously bought tickets for the November 2023 event you do not need to buy another ticket but you must email chris.m.harding@iinet.net.au to confirm previous payment and your planned attendance. Food Preparation for Perth's Homeless

The SCMS cooperation with Matilda Bay Rotary Club to provide food for Perth's homeless people continues into 2024! Since we are in the midst of the summer season, we will be making up a healthy salad for 100 diners and cook 200 sausages on our trusted ex-Bunnings BBQ. The food will be packed up ready for collection by our friends from Matilda Bay RC before they will serve it to the homeless people. Tools Induction (Red Dot) - Tuesday 23 January 2024

All Members who intend to be part of the Woodworking Group will need to complete this Power Tools Induction Training. There is a once off Cost of $10 for this Training Course, which can be paid when you purchase a ticket. There will be a maximum of 3 persons for each Training Session.  If after booking, for some reason you cannot attend the training, please advise the Red Dot coordinator, Jeremy Wallace, on 0406927650 (SMS please), or email (jeremy.wallace@iinet.net.au) as soon as possible, so we can arrange another session for you.  The successful completion of the Red Dot Training is a pre-requisite to booking the Blue Dot Woodwork Machinery Course. Once you have completed this Training, your Membership Badge will updated to show a Red Dot and enable you to undertake any projects in the Main Workshop that utilise only Power Tools.
