Golf Simulator Information Session
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
02:00 PM – 03:00 PM
For those Sheddies interested in the Golf Simulator prospect, we have organised for a representative from Trackman, Mr Brook Salmon, to come along to our Shed for a bit of a question-and-answer session. Brook is the Director of Sales Australia and New Zealand for the Trackman system. The Trackman system is one of the systems we are looking at for our Shed. Whilst no decision has been reached by the Shed Committee as to whether or not we shall proceed with this proposed  group we thought that since Brook was in Perth this week, and available, we would have him come to the Shed and answer any question you might have regarding Golf Simulators. The Shed has not reached any decision on the Golf Simulator whilst they consider the space requirements, location, and financial requirements for getting this group going. As a reminder of the survey results previously provided, they were; In broad terms 140 shed members responded to the survey. Without getting into too much detail the distilled results were 1: Members not in favour 62 (representing 44% of respondents), 2: Members in favour 53 (representing 38% of respondents) and 3: Members open minded to the idea being 25 (representing 18% of respondents). From these results, if you take a pessimistic view that only the 53 members who are in favour of the proposal were to form the golf sim group, then this group would be one of the largest groups in the shed. If you take an optimistic view and project the survey result percentages to the whole of our 300 members, then the golf sim group would have over 120 members and it would be the largest single group in the shed of consistent users of shed facilities in a month. So, from a membership engagement aspect, this group has tremendous potential for increasing membership engagement and fun at the Shed. In addition, a number of external non-members have indicated an interest in joining the Shed should we proceed with a Golf Simulator Group. Again, another positive for the Shed. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday. Best regards Peter Panek

Beer n Bullshit Sundowner - Dr Craig Challen SC OAM
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
04:00 PM – 06:00 PM
Hi Sheddies, This coming Tuesday 25th June we will be holding our most successful Beer & Bullshit meeting ever. No doubt this is all the consequence of having the World-famous Thia Cave rescuer, Dr Craig Challen, as our guest speaker. Craig has also competed in the SAS Australia TV series which many of you may be familiar with and he recently successfully completed a very deep dive to 283m off the coast of South Africa. I have no doubt Craig’s talk will be highly inspirational as he clearly has lots of experiences he can draw from. We already have nearly 90 participants registered for this event. Consequently, we will have to hold the meeting in the main woodworking room. A large screen has been set up on the front wall and we shall have a projector to display the presentation from Craig. Please note that on Tuesday the weather is expected to be raining and that the inside of the main building can get quite cold so be prepared. We ask that you plan to arrive early so that the presentation can commence on time and the attendees are not all waiting for a few late commers to arrive. Also starting on time will allow adequate time for a question-and-answer session after the presentation. Be advised that we shall be closing the woodwork area around lunch time on Tuesday, so we have time to relocate the work benches in order to open up the venue and to set up the projector, PA System, and chairs. Due to the physical constraints of the building with lots of external light the projector may not necessarily display the brightest of images and so I would recommend that you arrive early. Guests are welcome from 3:30pm for a 4:00pm start. This will ensure you have time to obtain a refreshing drink from the bar and take a seat close to the front of the room. The bar will be set up and operating from inside of the meeting room so you may quickly visit there and obtain a warming beverage to take to your seat before the talk begins. This Beer & Bullshit meeting will be followed by our regular monthly Sundowner as put on by our volunteer Kitchen Group. I understand that the food offering may include a number of hot finger food items which will be available from the tables in the meeting room after the conclusion of the talk. The Shed Committee has agreed to sponsor this event such that there will be no charge to you for this Sundowner event and we encourage you all to stay and enjoy the Kitchen Group’s fine offerings whilst enjoying all the usual camaraderie with your fellow Sheddies and guests. Because the Kitchen Group have no indication of the numbers of people who will attend the Sundowner, do not be surprised if the delicious foods on offer all disappear before you have had your fill. The bar will be open, and the usual wines and beer will all be available at regular shed prices. If any Sheddies are able to offer assistance to help set up the main woodworking area for this event and can attend on Tuesday from 12:30 onwards then your assistance would be greatly appreciated. With enough volunteers the set up should be accomplished relatively painlessly. Also reestablishing the woodworking area, the next morning will also require some extra volunteers to assist, so please check your diaries and see if you can help and come along and help out. Looking forward to seeing you all at the meeting. Peter Panek ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Through the contacts of our very own John Suthers, we have managed to secure Dr Craig Challen SC OAM as our next guest speaker. The Shed is fortunate to host Dr Craig Challen who has agreed to share with us his experiences in Thailand during the cave rescue mission and in Jordan whilst competing in SAS Australia. Craig and his colleague, Dr Harris, were the geniuses behind the Thai cave rescue of the trapped boys in June 2018. They were recognised for their considerable achievments by being awarded as Joint Australians of the Year in 2019.  They also have several other accolades. Craig was an acclaimed veterinary surgeon in his early career and at the same time developed an international reputation as an underwater cave diver. You may also have seen Craig as he made his way through SAS Australia which was screened on Channel 7 last year.  He was 1 of 3 contestants who completed the gruelling challenge which was shot in Jordan. This is a must-see presentation which Craig will be giving at 4 pm on Tuesday 25 June 2024.  He is an amazing Australian. BOOK YOUR SEATS EARLY.  PARTNERS WELCOME. So come along, be educated, inquisitive, engaged and be social by enjoying the company of your fellow Sheddies and partners at this Sundowner. Best regards Peter Panek

Morning tea with scones, jam and cream
10:30 AM – 11:30 AM
The Shed would like to encourage all of our members to continue to come along to our fabulous morning teas on Thursday mornings, and since these are so successful we have been adding Monday mornings to the Event for sometime now. We have not been advertising it greatly, but am now correcting that oversight. Scones with jam and cream will be available each Monday for our members, visitors and guests to enjoy. Until we get a better understanding on how many people will come along for this morning tea, the supply of scones might intially run out, but be patient and we will adjust the number available as the evidence of demand is gathered. We know Thursday mornings are greatly appreciated and we hope you can also come along and enjoy Mondays as well. Join everyone in our lovely garden area (or in the conference room if the weather is inclement) for fresh baked scones, jam and cream with friendly companionship. Prospective members are welcome.

To maintain your Blue Dot Woodworking Accreditation you will need to, you will need to undertake a Verification of Competency (VOC) Assessment as follows. Woodworking members aged under 75 years will be assessed every 24 months Woodworking members aged 75 to 84 years will be assessed every 18 months Woodworking members older than 85 years  will be assessed every 12 months You will be assigned a simple task which shouldn’t take more than about 30 minutes. This is not a test of your craftsmanship; it is simply a demonstration that you can competently use the machinery unsupervised without endangering yourself or others.  You can book your VOC Assessment by clicking on your preferred VOC Assessment date below. The Rostered Supervisor for the day will oversee your assessment and he will either deem you "competent" or refer you to a Trainer for further assessment or training. If you choose not to do the VOC Assessment,  you will no longer be able to use the Machine Room equipment unsupervised.
