Commercial Fishing in the 21st Century
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
04:30 PM – 05:30 PM
SORRY EVERYONE BUT THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL. Something different for this meeting.. A great story from a WA based Fishing Company David Carter is the CEO of the world’s first carbon-neutral commercial fishing company and has been recognised in a global award for ocean sustainability David has worked his entire career – from deckhand to CEO – at one of Australia’s largest commercial fishing companies. This year marks his 43rd anniversary with Austral Fisheries; a company he has continuously steered towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. His professional achievements include integrating sustainable sourcing and production, using environmentally responsible fishing practices, battling illegal fishing, and building globally recognised seafood brands such as Glacier 51 Toothfish and Skull Island Tiger Prawns. Austral Fisheries works to understand what’s happening in the ocean, how to engage with environmental NGOs and looks at the long-term outcome. “We are seeing governments slowly start to embrace science in a way that I think will be powerful. It offers us hope for some of our bigger climate challenges." As part of their advocacy for sustainable oceans, Austral Fisheries has partnered with Sea Shepherd to remove the seas of illegal fishing. “We share a common interest in bringing more climate action into the public policy debate and trying to do something together about marine ocean plastics,” David says. David was also the driving force behind Austral becoming the first seafood company to be certified as carbon neutral in 2016. One hundred per cent of Austral Fisheries’ carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions are offset each year through a native biodiverse revegetation project in the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor. This initiative has resulted in more than 200,000 native trees being planted each year. Having known David for close to 20 years I am in awe of his achievements and passion for his Industry.  Also an avid Cyclist, Photographer and Drone enthusiast and just a darn good guy. I'm sure everyone will enjoy his presentation. As always we'll have some light snacks (@$5/head) and drinks available from the Bar at around 5.30. Partners are welcome. BTW : Austral Fisheries is a" Friend of our Shed" having donated all the salmon trout for our Fundraising Ladies Luncheon held for the Friends of the Cancer Council In April this year.

Photography Workshop - "Then and Now" Project - Team Presentations
02:00 PM – 05:00 PM
2:00pm "Then and Now" Project - Team Presentations This Workshop is a presentation by our photography group teams to present their photos for our first team project, "Then and Now", a pictoral history of our local area. We have in teams of 2-3 members attempted to document some of the landscape, buildings and activities within our community by developing a pictorial timeline in our community over the last 100 years. We have received and used a set of historical photographs of the Claremont area thanks to the generous support of the Claremont Museum. We have also take a current photo from the same vantage point. Due to the age of many of the photos we have applied restoration techniques using Lightroom, Photoshop or other software packages to enhance the images.  We hope in partnership with the Claremont Museum to arrange a photo exhibition inviting community members to view our collection of photos illustrating the changing landscape in our community over the last 100 years. Our Photography Teams will present their historical and current photos in a digital presentation. as follows: Mike SB & David - Claremont CBD Les, Chris, Bill - Claremont CBD Mochtar, Mike H - Claremont CBD Peter B, Peter P - River Foreshore Tim, Owen - Claremont Streets Richard G, Stephen - Lake Claremont John, Jeff, Paul - Showgrounds 4:30pm Sundowner This Workshop will conclude with an opportunity to chat with our presenters over our usual wine and nibbles. Workshop Tickets I remind all members to please register prior to the event to assist with catering and ensure that we comply with the meeting room capacity requirements. I encourage you to attend this workshop and participate in this community project. Mike Somerville-Brown

Beer and Bullshit Sundowner
Showgrounds Community Men's Shed
03:00 PM – 05:00 PM
This Beer and Bullshit Sundowner is a new initiative of your management committee to engage with our members during an afternoon of beer tasting and stimulating conversation. We hope that this event, if adequately supported by our members, will become a regular occurrence on our busy calendar and forms the start of a new social occasion for each of us to enjoy. We will have several varieties of “Craft Beers” to enjoy and for the non-beer drinkers we shall have wine available along with the usual bar nibbles to accompany the alcohol. This is a low-key event and to encourage you to attend the committee has agreed to subsidise the first few of these and so drinks will be made available at regular club prices less $2/unit. Hence, regular beers become $3 each, a glass of wine at $3 each and the cost of the Craft beers will be $4 each. Where else can you get a $3 beer and loads of companionship? Naturally, the Shed wants you to drink safely and so recommends you do not drink and drive.  If you need a lift home, we recommend you use Uber as a cheap method of getting home.  If you can’t organise one for yourself, we will organise an Uber for you but you will be required to reimburse the Shed for the cost of the Uber ride before you leave the Shed by making a payment using the Payment Square terminal to cover the total cost. I hope to see as many along as possible on Tuesday however, due to Covid restrictions, we are limited to 30 members so please apply for your free ticket and hence register and secure your place. Best regards Peter Panek Vice President

Photography Workshop - Historical Photos Project and Rock Art Photography
02:00 PM – 05:30 PM
2:00pm Historical Photos Project Status Many of the teams are well progressed taking their current photographs and matching them with the rtelevant historical photos. We have also now purchased a high quality scanner and computer with a funding grant from the Town of Claremont to assist us with this project. This session will discuss three key tasks: 1. Getting the relevant high resolution historical images from the Town of Claremont by either downloading them from the Claremont Museum's digital archives or re-scanning the original. Depending on the number required we need to agree a process that meets the Museum's requirements for accessing and the preservation of these images. 2. As a gesture of goodwill we plan to assist the Museum to scan relevant images from the Museum's backlog of currently unscanned negatives, slides and prints for their preservation. We need volunteers for this task please. 3. Preparing a presentation of your team's historical and current photos preferably in a digital presentation.       3:15pm Mike Donaldson Presentation: Indigenous Rock Art Photography It gives us great pleasure to introduce our presenter, Mike Donaldson. Mike, is a geologist, avid photographer and bushwalker, who has devoted the past 30 years to systematically photographing and documenting indigenous rock art sights throughout the Kimberley, Burrup and selected areas elsewhere in Australia. The majority of the Kimberley art sites were previously unknown and were only discovered through Mike’s dedication and painstaking exploration on foot and with limited air support. The fruits of his labours have enabled Mike to create a wonderful series of quality, photographic rock art books, as well as an invaluable scientific legacy, comprising one of Australia’s largest photographic, rock art databases of some 100,000 images. Mike’s contributions are recognised nationally and internationally. He has generously donated his photographic collection for future management by UWA’s Centre for Rock Art Research. No doubt this collection will form the basis for a great deal of future research. Sundowner This Workshop will conclude with an informal discussion including the opportunity to chat with Mike over our usual drinks and nibbles. I hope you can attend this interesting Workshop.
